Measuring Distance

“Measuring Distance” is a show I put on with my talented friend and oil painter Ellen Nelson from April 4th to April 18th in the Saniwax Gallery of the Park Trades Center in Kalamazoo.

My Artist Statement for the show is the following:

noun: an amount of emotional, physical, or mental space between things or people

verb: to make (someone or something) far off or remote in position or nature

Distance is a measurement of the space between. One mind trying to convey itself to another, one consciousness bumping into another consciousness in a variety of inefficiently choreographed steps. Distance is communication: the lack of it, the manner of it, the intent of it. We measure distance in miles, in seconds before breaking eye contact, in the number of returned phone calls. We measure by where we look during a pause in conversation. We measure by forgetting before being forgotten, or the other way around. We measure by fidgeting, or staying calm, by the words we choose to speak or to leave unspoken in the back of our throats. With our inflections, our throat clearings, our clumsy excuses to leave, we carefully measure our distance whether we intend to or not.
